Had the most delicious evening today, photographing food and drink at Lips San Diego for their advertising. The staff was fantastic and we all worked together like a well-oiled machine, laughing and having a great time, yet cranking out the food, drinks, and photos swiftly! I shot more than 400 photos in 2 hrs of 32 plates or drinks. I am truly in love with food photography. It really excites me when I get good bokeh in the background and very shallow depth of field on the plate. I love looking at the plate from all angles, trying to find its best side like a person’s face. And with a wide aperture, I love moving the focal point on the plate to where I think you should focus your eyes. With every food photoshoot, I learn the limits of my lens and I also come home exhausted – I have a bad habit of holding my breath when I’m composing food shots. When I get super dizzy, I know I am really into the photoshoot, LOL.  I am also impressed that my current style of very low-key setup, yields such fantastic photo results. I bring my camera, external flash, my 1.8 lens, a reflector, and a big smile and willingness to do anything, and I leave with lots of laughs with the staff under my belt, and some amazing shots on my mem card. NONE of these photos were edited – no cropping, no color correcting, no exposure increasing, nada.  I came home after the shoot, deleted anything blurry or not composed well, burned them to DVD, posted my favorites of each plate/drink to my online galleries (see the slideshow below) and that’s it! Stay tuned for my upcoming restaurant shoots, more are being scheduled right now! xo Cali
